I lived in an apt. for 9 yrs. and had left a dep of 150. I just got a bill for 800 for cleaning carpet.legal?

is it legal to do this. according to them they will take me to collection agency. all other apts around me they put tile so i didnt go about cleaning in. what happened normal wear and tear, why are they not taking that into condideration
