You are correct. Vented gas longs are just that. They are nice to look at but do not provide much heat. If you use the logs, keep your flue open. You would do much better to do just what you said to put a wood burning insert into your fireplace. Do yourself a favor an add a 4 or 6 inch stainless steel liner up the chimney for extra protection in your stack. Good luck to you. You will be heating your entire home with wood. I do. Wood is cheaper then propane. Remove the entire line from the house.
