Electrical wiring, an outlet with a tester saying the hot and neutral aree wired backwards?

I have had a recent home inspection and according to the inspector I have an outlet with the hot and neutral reversed, i removed the outlet and it is properly wired however my tester said the same thing. I removed the wires and purposely wired it backwards (white to gold and black to silver. The result was the same according to the tester. Any ideas?
