How did slavery in the new colonies develop?

Slavery has often been treated as a marginal aspect of history, confined to southern or African American history. Slavery provided the labor force for a high-pressure profit-making capitalist system of plantation agriculture producing cotton, sugar, coffee, and cocoa for distant markets.
